"Ritual arises from man. Human beings have desires; desire unfulfilled cannot but breed resentment; resentment without measure breeds contention, and contention breeds disorder. The former kings hated this disorder, and so established ritual and righteousness to nourish men's desires and supply their wants, so that desire would not exhaust things nor things be exhausted by desire, the two sustaining each other and growing together β this is where ritual begins. Thus ritual is nourishment: rice, grain and the five flavours nourish the mouth; pepper, orchid and fragrant herbs nourish the nose; bells, drums, pipes and strings nourish the ear; carving, pattern and ornament nourish the eye; spacious rooms, beds, mats and seats nourish the body. Ritual is nourishment."
